Brick & Block Calculator is a free, in-browser tool that estimates how many bricks or concrete blocks you need to build a wall, plus the mortar bags to lay them. Enter the wall length and height, pick a masonry type, and everything is computed locally as you type — nothing is uploaded.

The wall area is length × height (in square feet). Each masonry type carries a bricks-per-square-foot figure that already accounts for a standard 3/8-inch mortar joint: 6.86 for modular brick, 6.55 for standard (queen-size handles 5.76), and 1.125 for an 8×8×16 concrete block. Choose Custom to derive it from your own units: bricks per ft² = 144 ÷ ((face length + joint) × (face height + joint)), with all dimensions in inches. The final count is area × bricks-per-ft² × (1 + waste ÷ 100), rounded up. Mortar is estimated at roughly one 80-lb bag per 125 bricks.

Use it to order materials for a wall, veneer or planter: the waste percentage (10% by default) covers cuts and breakage, so the headline number is a safe buy quantity rather than a bare minimum.

Frequently asked questions

What does 'bricks per square foot' include?
It is the number of masonry units that cover one square foot of wall face including the mortar joint around each unit. The presets assume the industry-standard 3/8-inch joint; the Custom option lets you set the face size and joint thickness yourself.
How is the mortar estimate calculated?
The tool uses a rule of thumb of about 125 bricks laid per 80-lb bag of mortar mix and rounds up. Actual yield varies with joint thickness and unit size, so treat it as a starting quantity and confirm against your mortar's coverage.
Why is the brick count rounded up?
You cannot buy a fraction of a brick, and cuts and breakage waste material, so the count is always rounded up after applying the waste percentage. Lower the waste field to zero if you want the exact theoretical figure.
Are my measurements sent anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser; wall sizes and material counts never leave your device, and the tool works offline.
