Watch bit vs byte: 1 byte = 8 bits, so 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps. Decimal units use 1000, binary (Ki/Mi) use 1024.

About this tool

Convert a data-transfer rate between eleven units, fully in your browser. Choose the From and To units, enter a speed, and read the result live; the ⇄ button swaps them.

The base unit is the bit per second (bit/s). Every unit has a factor to bit/s, so conversions are value × from-factor ÷ to-factor. The key trap is bit vs byte: 1 byte = 8 bits, so 1 MB/s (megabyte per second) = 8 Mbps (megabit per second). Watch decimal vs binary too — a kilobit is 1000 bits, but a kibibyte is 1024 bytes = 8192 bits.

Handy for comparing an ISP plan quoted in Mbps against a download manager showing MB/s, or storage tools using MiB/s.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 1 MB/s equal to 8 Mbps?
Because one byte is eight bits. Megabytes-per-second use bytes, megabits-per-second use bits, so the byte rate is eight times larger in bits.
What base unit is used?
The bit per second (bit/s). All units convert through it: value × from-factor ÷ to-factor.
What is the difference between MB/s and MiB/s?
MB/s is decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes); MiB/s is binary (1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes). MiB/s is about 4.9% larger.
Are lowercase b and uppercase B different?
Yes — lowercase b means bits (Mbps) and uppercase B means bytes (MB/s). The labels spell each out to avoid confusion.
