About this tool

The Molarity & Dilution Calculator is a free, in-browser chemistry tool that finds the molar concentration of a solution, rearranges the dilution equation C1V1 = C2V2 for whichever quantity you leave blank, and lays out the concentrations of a serial dilution. In molarity mode you can type a chemical formula (for example NaCl or C6H12O6) and the molar mass is computed automatically from standard atomic weights, or you can enter the molar mass by hand.

Everything runs locally in your browser using plain JavaScript arithmetic — nothing you type is uploaded, logged, or sent to a server, so lab values and reagent amounts stay private on your device. The dilution mode expects exactly one empty field and solves for it; the serial mode repeatedly divides the stock concentration by a fold factor to list each tube.

Molarity is reported in mol/L (molar, M) with volume entered in millilitres and converted to litres internally. Concentration and volume units in the dilution equation are yours to choose, as long as both concentrations share one unit and both volumes share another.

Frequently asked questions

What units does the molarity mode use?
Mass is in grams, molar mass in g/mol, and volume in millilitres (converted to litres for the mol/L result). Moles = mass ÷ molar mass, and molarity = moles ÷ volume-in-litres.
How does the dilution mode work?
It uses C1V1 = C2V2. Leave exactly one of the four boxes blank and it is solved from the other three; C1 and C2 can be in any concentration unit and V1 and V2 in any volume unit, as long as each pair matches.
How is molar mass found from a formula?
The formula is parsed into element counts (parentheses and brackets are supported) and multiplied by IUPAC standard atomic weights, then summed. If the formula is empty or invalid, the manual molar-mass field is used instead.
What does serial dilution mode show?
Starting from the stock concentration it divides by the fold factor at each step, so a 1:10 serial dilution over 5 tubes gives 10⁻¹ to 10⁻⁵ of the stock; each tube's concentration and cumulative fold are listed.
