About this tool
The Typing Speed Test is a free, in-browser test that measures your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) with live accuracy. Pick a 30-second, 1-minute or 2-minute test, then type the highlighted words — the timer starts on your first keystroke and your WPM, accuracy and word counts update as you go.
WPM uses the standard definition: correctly typed characters divided by 5, per minute — so long words count more than short ones and mistyped words don't inflate your score. Words you get right turn green; misses turn red.
The test runs entirely in your browser: no signup, no upload, and a fresh shuffled word order every restart.
Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
WPM = (correctly typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed — the industry-standard formula where a 'word' is 5 characters, including the space after each correct word.
How does accuracy work?
Accuracy = correct characters ÷ all characters you typed, as a percentage — mistyped words lower it and cannot raise your WPM.
What counts as a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average, 60–80 WPM is good for professional work, and 100+ WPM is fast; accuracy above 95% matters more than raw speed.
Can I retake the test?
Yes — press restart (or change the duration) any time for a fresh test with the words reshuffled, so you can't memorize the sequence.
