What is percent yield?
It is the ratio of the actual amount of product obtained to the theoretical maximum, times 100: % yield = actual ÷ theoretical × 100. An actual of 45 g from a theoretical 50 g gives 90%.
Can I use grams or moles?
Either — the actual and theoretical yields just need to share the same unit (both grams or both moles), since the ratio is dimensionless and the units cancel out.
Which value can I solve for?
Leave exactly one field blank. Blank percent gives actual ÷ theoretical × 100, blank actual gives theoretical × percent ÷ 100, and blank theoretical gives actual ÷ (percent ÷ 100).
Why might I get a yield over 100%?
A percent yield above 100% is physically impossible for pure product; it usually means the product was still wet, impure, or the mass was mis-measured. The tool still computes it so you can spot the error.
