About this tool

Convert a torque (moment of force) value between eight units, entirely in your browser. Pick the From and To units, type a value, and the result updates live; use ⇄ to swap them.

The base unit is the newton-metre (N·m). Each unit has a factor to N·m, so conversions are value × from-factor ÷ to-factor. The most-used automotive conversion is pound-force foot: 1 lbf·ft = 1.3558179483 N·m, so a 1 N·m value ≈ 0.7376 lbf·ft. Do not confuse lbf·ft (foot) with lbf·in (inch), which is twelve times smaller.

Useful for fastener specs, engine torque and bolt tightening. For example 100 N·m ≈ 73.76 lbf·ft.

Frequently asked questions

What is the base unit?
The newton-metre (N·m). All units convert through it: value × from-factor ÷ to-factor.
How many N·m is a pound-force foot?
One lbf·ft is 1.3558179483 N·m, so 1 N·m is about 0.7376 lbf·ft and 100 N·m is about 73.76 lbf·ft.
What is the difference between lbf·ft and lbf·in?
A foot is twelve inches, so 1 lbf·ft = 12 lbf·in. Mixing them up is a common torque-spec error.
Is torque the same as energy since both can be N·m?
No. They share the unit dimensionally but are different physical quantities; this tool only converts torque values.
